The relationship between the European Union and the United States, especially after Donald Trump's return to the White House, is under close public scrutiny due to numerous challenges from the past. The direction this relationship will now take was analyzed for EUpravo zato by Member of the European Parliament Dan Barna, known for his progressive stance and efforts to oppose the existing political establishment, particularly in the fight against corruption and political elites.
"Europe must fill the gap that the USA is currently leaving in the world — not in a positive but a negative sense — because of what is happening with USAID. The support expected in many areas — social, health, medical... — is now endangered due to the 'steps back that the US has taken,'" Barna said for our portal.
He believes that it is time for Europe to step in and cover as much as possible, although he emphasizes that it is not possible to cover all cases.
"In many areas, I expect the European Commission to deliver a plan to face the new reality in the field of economy, tariffs, aid... In all these areas, we must stand up and confront reality," he added.
How do you see the enlargement process in 2025?
Regarding the enlargement process this year, Barna believes that Commissioner Marta Kos's message is a signal that the European Commission continues to provide support.
"I listened to Marta Kos, the Commissioner for Enlargement, and the Commission's desire to take further steps with Ukraine, which in itself is a signal that the Commission's position is to continue supporting Ukraine, as well as the Western Balkans and Western Moldova," he explained.
He says there are huge expectations for this Commission, and there is a desperate expectation from citizens that the Commission proves it can translate its words into action.
