The city of Konjic has received essential emergency response equipment worth €60,000 to strengthen its disaster response capabilities as part of the European Union’s broader support for flood-affected communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The equipment, which includes 100 water tanks, 50 electricity generators, and 25 high-pressure washers, has been provided through the project "EU Support for Sustainable Water Service Management in Bosnia and Herzegovina (EU4MEG)", funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This donation ensures that key resources reach municipalities most exposed to natural disasters.
This is the second equipment delivery, following the first shipment to Donja Jablanica in October 2024.
The initiative is part of the European Union’s broader commitment to supporting Bosnia and Herzegovina in its recovery from the devastating floods and landslides of October 2024. In response to this disaster, the EU quickly provided emergency aid through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Additionally, the EU allocated €20 million to support affected communities, with a special focus on housing reconstruction, community infrastructure, and private sector development.
The equipment handover in Konjic brought together representatives of the EU, UNDP, local authorities, and direct beneficiaries who will use the equipment.
Mojca Krisper Figueroa reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to disaster preparedness and recovery: "The EU remains a reliable partner to municipalities affected by the floods and landslides of October 2024, and we will continue to provide support to help recovery efforts and strengthen resilience and preparedness for the future. I am pleased that the equipment delivered to Donja Jablanica and Konjic will contribute to the ongoing flood recovery efforts."
Renaud Meyer, a UNDP representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasised the importance of strengthening local disaster preparedness.
"With the support of the European Union, we are enhancing the capacity of communities on the front lines of climate risks. The equipment delivered to Konjic will enable emergency services to respond quickly and efficiently, contributing to long-term resilience and disaster risk reduction in Bosnia and Herzegovina," he stated.
The mayor of Konjic, Osman Ćatić, expressed his gratitude for the support, highlighting the importance of this equipment for the city's emergency response teams: "These are short-term measures, but long-term actions will follow to prevent future disasters."
One of the beneficiaries, Sead Zalihić from Buturović Polje, who experienced the devastating impact of past floods, shared his perspective on the significance of the new equipment.
"Any form of assistance to Konjic at this moment is welcome. The road to recovery may be long and difficult, but life must go on," he said.
The European Union continues to strengthen the capacities of municipalities across Bosnia and Herzegovina, ensuring critical infrastructure and resources to mitigate the impact of natural disasters. This latest delivery to Konjic represents another step towards building stronger and more resilient communities in the face of environmental challenges.
