The Serbian and Portuguese basketball teams played their second-round match of the European Championship in Riga, Latvia, as part of Group A. On the occasion, the WMG Foundation’s EUpravo Zato initiative organised a joint viewing in the informal setting of the garden of its office building, with numerous guests in attendance.
Among the guests was His Excellency José Rui Velez Caroço, Ambassador of Portugal to Serbia, who pointed out that Serbia was the favourite, but that the dedication of the Portuguese players made the match much more uncertain than expected.
Before the broadcast began, the audience was welcomed by the director of the WMG Foundation, Irena Petrović, while the teams were also supported by Serbia’s Head of Mission to the EU, Danijel Apostolović, who is currently in Belgrade, as well as representatives of the embassies of Finland, Slovakia and Germany. Guests from the business world and the non-governmental sector were also present.
“The EUpravo Zato initiative was launched just over a year ago with the aim of contributing to understanding, building trust and strengthening partnerships between Serbia, the Western Balkans and the European Union,” said Milana Petrović, editor-in-chief of the EUpravo Zato website.
“One of the best ways to promote this understanding is through sport. Sport is a special kind of diplomacy, especially at the national team level, when through competitiveness and fair play we convey messages of friendship and unity,” she added.
