For several years, Stefan Simonović, a dairy specialist, has been one of the most sought-after producers of cheese and dairy products in eastern Serbia. His dairy, Zapis Homolja, located in the village of Oštrelj, has become synonymous with premium quality and authentic taste.

A Unique Range of Products

Stefan’s range includes hand-crafted cheese aged in local red wine, white cheese, grilled cheese, and traditional yoghurt and sour milk made from a recipe over a century old. These exceptional products not only satisfy the palate but also spark the imagination, offering a unique blend of tradition and modern innovation in dairy.

What sets Stefan’s products apart is their entirely natural origin, using milk sourced from pastures on the slopes of the Homolje Mountains. With an average altitude of 900 metres and a location far from industrial zones, the pristine environment guarantees unpolluted, high-quality raw materials, making the milk from this region a true delicacy.

Building a Brand from Scratch

Starting his business from nothing, Stefan and his family, with support from the city of Bor, have demonstrated remarkable entrepreneurial skill and dedication. Their efforts have made Zapis Homolja a recognised brand both locally and nationally.

Through the EU PRO Plus programme, the European Union identified the potential of this project and provided financial support for its growth. This allowed Stefan to expand production and improve the quality of his products.

Beyond supporting the local economy, the EU PRO Plus programme has broader social goals, aiming to enhance social infrastructure and cohesion across Serbia. Implemented by the Ministry of European Integration and UNOPS, the programme actively contributes to Serbia’s economic growth and sustainable development.

Stefan wisely utilised the €20,000 financial grant and, with minimal investment, created new jobs while introducing new products and flavours to his offerings.

A Symbol of Local Entrepreneurship

Through his dedicated work and entrepreneurial spirit, Stefan has not only built a thriving business but also become a symbol of local entrepreneurship. He is a shining example of how tradition can be seamlessly merged with modern business practices.

Homolje Cheeses Protected by Geographic Indication

To preserve the authentic production techniques of Homolje cheeses made from cow’s, sheep’s, and goat’s milk, and to organise production more formally, these cheeses have been granted protection under a geographic indication.

The certification guarantees consumers that Homolje cheeses reflect a unique combination of local natural resources, tradition, and the skills passed down through generations.

The entire Homolje region is renowned for its natural beauty, and livestock farming—primarily raising cows, sheep, and goats—has been a way of life for its inhabitants for centuries.
